Check an IBAN

Check whether an IBAN from an invoice or supplier is well-formed before you pay or add it to your books. The check tests the check digits and the length per country, and runs entirely in your browser.

  • Free
  • Check digits under ISO 13616
  • All IBAN countries

Which IBAN do you want to check?

Spaces may stay in.

Well-formed is not the same as belonging to the supplier

Every IBAN carries check digits. That catches almost any typo: a wrong digit, two swapped digits or a missing character. This tool recalculates those digits and tests the length that belongs to the country.

What no IBAN check can see is whose name the account is in. A fraudster with a real IBAN gets through every check. That is what the bank's name check at the time of transfer is for.

The checks at a glance

  • Letters and digits only; spaces are ignored
  • A country code from the IBAN registry
  • Exactly the length that belongs to that country
  • Correct MOD-97 check digits
  • For a Dutch IBAN: the bank behind the bank code

A new IBAN on an invoice? Call first.

In invoice fraud the IBAN is usually perfectly valid: it just doesn't belong to the supplier. If a supplier changes its account number, call a number you already knew before you pay or change the contact in your books.

Questions about checking an IBAN

What does this IBAN check test?

Whether the number is well-formed: an existing country code, the right length for that country and correct check digits. That catches almost any typo, such as a wrong digit or two swapped digits.

Does valid mean the account exists?

No. A valid IBAN is well-formed, but whether the account exists and whose name it is in, only the bank knows. Banks check the name when you make a transfer and warn you if it doesn't match the IBAN.

How do the check digits of an IBAN work?

The two digits after the country code are check digits under the MOD-97 method of ISO 13616. Move the first four characters to the end, replace letters with numbers (A = 10, B = 11 and so on) and divide by 97: the remainder must be exactly 1.

How long is a Dutch IBAN?

18 characters: NL, two check digits, four letters for the bank and ten digits for the account number. For example NL91 ABNA 0417 1643 00.

Is the IBAN I enter sent or stored?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser. The number is not sent to Agentancy or anyone else and is not stored.

A supplier sends a new IBAN. What now?

A suddenly changed account number is a well-known form of invoice fraud. Verify the change through a phone number you already knew, not through the email or invoice that contains the new number.

Recognise suppliers by their IBAN, automatically?

Agentancy reads the IBAN on every invoice and uses it to recognise the supplier, but only when the check digits are correct. Try it free for 30 days.
