Open and view a UBL file

A UBL e-invoice is an XML file: handy for an accounting package, unreadable for a person. Drag the file into the viewer below and you see an ordinary invoice, with lines, VAT breakdown, totals and the PDF the supplier attached.

  • Peppol BIS 3, NLCIUS and SI-UBL
  • File stays in your browser

Open an e-invoice as a readable invoice

How to open a UBL invoice

  1. Choose the file

Drag the .xml file into the viewer or click to choose it. The file usually arrives as an email attachment or comes from your accounting package.

  2. View the invoice

Supplier, buyer, lines, VAT and totals are laid out at once. The checks show whether the amounts add up.

  3. Download the PDF

If the file contains a PDF, you download it with one click. That is the invoice as the supplier laid it out.

An invoice as data instead of as an image

A PDF or photo of an invoice still has to be read: by a person, or by software that recognises the text. A UBL file contains the data itself, each in its own field. The invoice number, the VAT per rate and the IBAN are in it literally, so there is nothing to guess.

That is why the number of e-invoices is growing fast. For invoices between EU countries a European requirement applies from 1 July 2030, and the Dutch government wants to make domestic business-to-business e-invoicing mandatory on the same date. There is no law for that yet, but anyone who keeps an administration already receives .xml files more and more often.

Which formats does the viewer read?

  • Peppol BIS Billing 3.0

The European standard on the Peppol network

  • NLCIUS

The Dutch version of the European standard, common for invoices to the government

  • SI-UBL 1.2 / 2.0

The older Dutch format; Exact, among others, still exports it

  • Credit note

In all three formats, with the amounts shown as a credit

The checks at a glance

  • Total excl. VAT plus VAT equals the total incl. VAT
  • The invoice lines add up to the total excl. VAT
  • The VAT breakdown adds up to the VAT total
  • The invoice number and invoice date are present
  • For reverse-charged VAT, both VAT numbers are on the invoice

See at a glance whether the invoice is right

An e-invoice is not automatically error-free. A line that does not add up, or reverse-charged VAT without the buyer's VAT number, also occurs in XML. The viewer recalculates the amounts, allowing one cent for rounding, and tells you when something does not add up.

It is a quick check for whoever has to post the invoice, not a full validation against all Peppol rules. The amounts are not estimated or filled in: what you see is exactly what is in the file.

The invoice never leaves your browser

The viewer reads the file with JavaScript on your own device. No server request with the invoice leaves your device, no AI model is involved and nothing is stored, not in the URL and not in your browser's storage. So you can safely open your clients' invoices.

The viewer uses the same UBL reader that Agentancy uses for incoming e-invoices. No rights can be derived from the display.

Questions about UBL and e-invoices

What is a UBL file?

UBL (Universal Business Language) is an XML format for invoices. Instead of an image or PDF, the file contains the data itself: supplier, buyer, invoice lines, VAT and totals, each in its own field. An accounting package can therefore import it without retyping.

How do I open a UBL file?

Drag the .xml file into the viewer at the top of this page, or click to choose it. You immediately see the invoice with lines, VAT breakdown and totals. If the supplier attached a PDF, you can download it with one click.

Why do I only see code when I open the file?

A UBL file is meant for software, not for people. A browser or text editor therefore shows the XML itself, with the attached PDF as one long string of characters. This viewer turns that data into an ordinary invoice.

Is my invoice sent anywhere?

No. The file is read in your own browser and is not sent to Agentancy or anyone else, not put in the URL and not stored. Refresh the page and it is gone.

What is the difference between UBL and Peppol?

UBL is the format of the file. Peppol is the network over which such files are sent between businesses, through connected access points. This viewer reads the format; it does not send or receive anything via Peppol.

Will e-invoicing become mandatory in the Netherlands?

It looks that way. For invoices between EU countries a European requirement applies from 1 July 2030. The Dutch government wants to make domestic business-to-business e-invoicing mandatory on the same date, but there is no law for that yet. Invoices to central government have had to be electronic for some time.

What does the viewer check?

Whether the totals add up, whether the invoice lines add up to the total, whether the VAT breakdown matches the VAT total, whether the invoice number and date are present, and, for reverse-charged VAT, whether both VAT numbers are on the invoice. It is not a full validation against the Peppol rules.
