Every three letters, one level deeper

An RGS code starts with B for the balance sheet or W for the profit and loss account. After that, each level adds a block of three letters. So the code itself tells you where an account belongs: everything starting with WBedAut is car expenses.

Level 4 is the GL account you post to. Level 5 breaks a balance sheet account down further into movements, such as opening balance, investments and depreciation. RGS Basic is a smaller selection; RGS Extended contains all codes.

Choosing an account: what to look for

  • Expenses belong on the profit and loss account (W). An investment above the capitalisation threshold goes on the balance sheet, as does a prepayment.
  • When in doubt between two accounts, pick the most specific one: car fuel costs say more than other car expenses.
  • Don't use an inactive code for new entries. Look at the section above it to see which code replaced it.
  • Debit or credit tells you on which side the balance normally sits. An expense account is a debit, a revenue account a credit.

Questions about RGS codes

What is RGS?

RGS stands for Referentie GrootboekSchema, the Dutch Reference Chart of Accounts: a standard list of GL accounts for Dutch administrations. Each account has a fixed code and a fixed number, so accounting packages, accountants and reports recognise the same structure.

Is RGS mandatory?

No. RGS is a voluntary standard. You can keep your own chart of accounts and map each account to an RGS code. More and more accounting packages work with RGS, because it makes reporting and comparing easier.

What is the difference between the reference code and the reference number?

They are the same account written in two ways. The reference code is made of letters, such as WBedAutBra for car fuel costs. The reference number is the numeric version, 4204010. Both are unique, so you can search on either.

Which version of RGS is in this lookup?

RGS 3.8, the final version of December 2025, with all 4,980 codes. Inactive codes are included too, so you can still find an old code; they are marked and hidden by default.

What does the reversal code mean?

Some balance sheet accounts can change sign. If a bank account is overdrawn, it is no longer a balance but a debt. The reversal code is the account where the balance then belongs.

Is what I search for sent or stored?

No. The complete RGS list is loaded into your browser and searched there. Your search term does not go to Agentancy or anyone else.

Invoices on the right GL account, automatically?

Agentancy picks the GL account from your client's chart of accounts for every invoice and takes the RGS classification into account. A cost invoice about to land on a balance sheet account does not slip through unnoticed. Try it free for 30 days.
